Asteroid danger: NASA admits Earth is 'in shooting gallery' - 'Could lay waste to planet'
NASA has shockingly claimed Earth sits in a “shooting gallery” of asteroids and comets that could “lay waste to the whole planet”.

An episode of the podcast published on October 8 focused on asteroid impacts and NASA’s ability to spot them before certain cataclysm.
Speaking to guest astronomer Greg Leonard, Ms Mullen said NASA does not know of any imminent danger.
But undiscovered “monsters lurking in the dark” could threaten to flatten the Earth.
Ms Mullen said: “Movies like ‘Armageddon’ depict a massive asteroid hitting Earth, causing widespread destruction and chaos.

“Huge rocks falling from the sky could take out a city, a nation or even lay waste to the whole planet and that can feel like the universe is out to get us.
“Daily headlines that scream about asteroids coming too close to Earth encourage this paranoia.
“The truth is, our planet is in the middle of a cosmic shooting gallery.
“Asteroids fly by and the Earth is hit every day with hundreds of tonnes of dust grains and small rocks.”
When a six-mile-wide (10km) space rock struck the planet 66 million years, the impact wiped out two-thirds of life on Earth.
Scientists estimate the killer asteroid triggered a nuclear winter of sorts that ended the reign of the dinosaurs.

Since then, many smaller asteroids have pelted the planet.
In 2013, for instance, an undetected 65.6ft-wide (20m) space rock exploded in the skies over Russia’s Chelyabinsk Oblast.
According to Ms Mullen, the resulting shockwave blasted windows “into millions of flying glass shards” and “knocked some right off their feet”.
More than 1,500 people were injured by the sudden asteroid strike.
Ms Mullen said: “The small rocks from space do little to no damage. It’s the big ones we worry about.

“And there are big asteroids out there, monsters lurking in the dark, large enough to take us out.
“Currently, none of the really big asteroids are headed for us. But we haven’t found them all.”
For the most part, the Earth is protected from minor asteroids and space rocks by its atmosphere.
Any space rock up to 82ft (25m) across is expected to burn up before hitting the ground.
But incidents like the 2013 Chelyabinsk strike prove some asteroids slip past Earth’s defences.
Mr Leonard, an astronomer with the Catalina Sky Survey, said on the podcast: “Chelyabinsk was 20 meters.
“That is small compared to what we are looking for. And that produced a large shock wave in the upper atmosphere. It was a pretty serious event.
“But, we see now that these relatively smaller asteroids can be quite dangerous.
“So, we are wanting to up our game and find asteroids of all sizes.”
